The bleak reality of forced displacement, and the disquiet of an uncertain destination. The piece in boats originated after reading a stirring newspaper headline.* For me, the substantial snippet of information became the driving force behind the piece. It references the humanitarian crisis caused by forced displacement whether rooted in environmental, political or social factors. in boats is searching to visualise the experience of many of the unseen individuals who find themselves enveloped by this complicated situation. It speaks about the people venturing out to open seas in search of better and more suitable conditions of life. In precarious vessels, on journeys holding a continuous state of expectancy, and longing for a destination that stands in the balance.

Editors’ note: this essay rather reminded us of other we have published, “Boat” by Jean-François Boclé and “Floaters” by Martín Espada that treat a similar theme. You may consult these other pieces.
