Maddalena Italia. I am currently a Research Fellow at UCL (University College London), working on the Leverhulme-funded project “Comparative Classics: Greece, Rome, India”.
I started my Sanskrit studies in 2008, during my BA in Classics at Milan University. I continued studying Sanskrit language and literature throughout my MA in Classics (Milan University) and my MA in Languages and Cultures of South Asia (SOAS).
In June 2018, I defended my PhD thesis at SOAS, titled “The Erotic Untranslatable: The Modern Reception of Sanskrit Love Poetry in The West and in India”.
I began teaching Sanskrit in 2014 at SOAS (University of London), while working on my doctoral degree. For two academic years (2014-15 and 2015-16), it was my task and pleasure to introduce BA and MA students to the intricacies of Sanskrit grammar. In 2017, I moved on to adult teaching, first at the SOAS Language Centre and then at City Lit (London), where until March 2021 I taught Classical Greek, Latin and Sanskrit.
In 2018 I inaugurated a Sanskrit course at the British Museum (in partnership with City Lit), which allows me to teach the rudiments of the language while sharing my passion for South Asian manuscripts and miniature paintings.

Comencé mis estudios de sánscrito en 2008, durante mi licenciatura en Estudios Clásicos en la Universidad de Milán. Continué estudiando lengua y literatura sánscrita a lo largo de mi Maestría en Clásicos (Universidad de Milán) y mi Maestría en Idiomas y Culturas del Sur de Asia (SOAS).
En junio de 2018, defendí mi tesis doctoral en SOAS, titulada “Lo erótico intraducible: la recepción moderna de la poesía amorosa en sánscrito en Occidente y en la India”.
Comencé a enseñar sánscrito en 2014 en SOAS (Universidad de Londres), mientras trabajaba en mi doctorado. Durante dos años académicos (2014-15 y 2015-16), fue mi tarea y un placer presentarles a los estudiantes de BA y MA las complejidades de la gramática sánscrita. En 2017, pasé a la enseñanza de adultos, primero en SOAS Language Centre y luego en City Lit (Londres), donde hasta marzo de 2021 enseñé griego clásico, latín y sánscrito.
En 2018, inauguré un curso de sánscrito en el Museo Británico (en asociación con City Lit), que me permite enseñar los rudimentos del idioma mientras comparto mi pasión por los manuscritos y pinturas en miniatura del sur de Asia.
