Bennett Gilbert is an adjunct Assistant Professor at Portland State University, teaching philosophy and history. As a philosopher, his chief interest is the philosophy of history, of which he works on developing a new type that uses pastness to address fundamental problems of normative ethics. This is an existential philosophy of history, neither critical nor speculative. As a historian, he has a broad interest in the history of ideas, with special interests in the concepts involved in the development of printing and engraving c. 1375-1450, the study of the “moral worlds” of the past, and the arts and thinking in the Rococo. He is the author of A Personalist Philosophy of History (Routledge, 2019) and of various papers, and is co-editor with Natan Elgabsi of the forthcoming collection of papers Ethics and Time in the Philosophy of History: A Cross-Cultural Approach (Bloomsbury, 2022). He is currently working on a book at the boundary-less intersection of philosophy of history and moral philosophy.
