“Dear Tiger. I bought tickets and a sanatorium tour. We’re going to summer. I keep tormenting myself that I didn’t figure it out sooner: always fly off into the summer if I’m scared. After all, I’ve always had a good time in summer.”
The Blue Tiger finished reading the letter and unintentionally crumpled the paper.
– “What does that mean?” – his tone was as calm as usual but still betrayed dissatisfaction.
– “And you’ve changed color,” – Marta said, looking at the Blue Tiger and ignoring his question, – “Now you’re some kind of graphite.”
The blue tiger nervously twitched his tail, but after a second he calmed down completely and smiled.
– “And you’ve already invented the purpose of our journey?”
– “I confess, I haven’t!” – Marta sank into a cushioned chair and sighed heavily. – “But I was hoping you’d do it on the plane. But!” – she jumped up again and began to pace the empty waiting hall, dragging the plume of a puffy dress behind her – “but, I made sure that you will not fly in the compartment for animals like last time.”
– “Thank you”
The Tiger was following Marta, sprawled out in a chair with his chin tucked under his paw. Suddenly he jerked his tail sharply and violently, and the silver chain linking him to Marta’s wing – as we remember, she had a wing instead of her left arm – with a metallic sound, the chain went up in a rapid wave. Marta didn’t have time to take a step before a tug of the taut chain tore her toward Tiger.
– “Are you running away again, dear Marta?” – he asked
Marta sat very close to Tiger, with her nose in his soft fur.
– “I’m in beta testing mode.” – She mumbled
– “Why did you burn down the house before you departed?”
– “Well, that was logical!” – Marta turned away and cockily turned her nose up – “So that I would not have a chance to go back.”
– “My favorite beige trench coat burned there.”
– “That doesn’t matter at all,” – Marta smiled victoriously – “I shouldn’t be scolded for that! Why do you need a coat if we’re going to summer?”
After the Letters is part of the series of short stories Marta and the Blue Tiger. With a philosophical twist, the stories depict the adventures of the girl, who has a wing instead of her left arm, and the wise talking Blue Tiger. In these stories, in their own unconventional style, Marta and the Blue Tiger reflect on rather non-trivial views on modern values, attitudes and human vices. Marta and the Blue Tiger will be published over the next months. You can see the previous piece of the series here.
