The first piece consists of a repeated reconstruction of Dmitiri Prigov’s sitkohgram And Life is Good and To Live is Good… from circa 1975-1985. The original sitkohgram is constructed from two fragments taken from Vladimir Mayakovsky’s poetry volume Good! The Revolution Poem, which can be found in the last lines of chapter 19, titled I Understand this World. The second design in turn is constructed from a fragment from the gnostic text The Thunder, Perfect Mind. The initial appropriation of a text by Prigov set the precedent for this piece as the cycle of this symbolic gesture is developed through the inclusion of a secondary text. The aim of this piece is the creation of a meditative state of sorts, akin to the one caused by actual altars/icons, except now being induced by the fatigue of the viewer’s perception and engagement of their senses. The primary tool for achieving this effect is repetition, which can be found throughout every element in the piece. During the reading of the piece, the mind is totally numbed, which in turns allows for the engagement of all three senses, breaking the borders between them. The relationship between the new piece and successive appropriations also plays with our notions of borders between the used and the new.
